Book Signings in Calgary
By Donna Fletcher Crow ~ October 18, 2010
Canadians are known for their open, welcoming hospitality and after my two book events there last week I can certainly vouch for that being a much-deserved reputation.
The Owl's Nest, an independent bookstore in the charming Britannia Shopping Plaza http://www.owlsnestbooks.com/ was the venue for both events: a Saturday afternoon reading and book signing and the following Tuesday evening, a talk to Mystery Writers Ink, a very active writers' group. http://www.mysterywritersink.com/

The Saturday event had been advertised by the book store which maintains a regular schedule of speakers and I had sent postcards to my friends and contacts in the area, especially to the parish of St. John the Evangelist. Mystery writers, old friends and parishioners turned out in a loyal and enthusiastic force to hear me read a cutting from the first chapter of A VERY PRIVATE
GRAVE, speak about how the book came into being and answer questions while they munched on a fruit platter and pumpkin cookies provided by storeowner Judith who is also a writer herself.
The other side of the store is Owlets— children's books and delightful toys— which kept my grandchildren thoroughly engrossed. And Dominic even bought books with his own money.
One always feels responsible to the store hosting such an event, so I can't say a warm enough thank you to all who supported me by turning out and entering in so enthusiastically. And for buying books, of course!
Tuesday night I returned to The Owl's Nest to speak on "Plotting for Research and Plotting from Research." This was my debut experience using power point which made me feel very tekky, indeed. I even had my slide show on my very own thumb drive which Judith very kindly let me play on the Owl's Nest's computer. I enjoyed showing pictures from my research trip for A DARKLY HIDDEN TRUTH, book 2 in The Monastery Murders, and showing how visiting certain places helped me develop my plot in unexpected ways.
After a good Q & A session with the Calgary mystery writers, I signed books— and because the store sold out of their supply of my books— I finished off by signing promotional postcards.

The best part of such events, of course, is always the people one meets. Donna Wickens, publicity chairman for Mystery Writers provided much-appreciated transportation, introduced me, and took pictures, therefore, she isn't in any. But through the wonders of the internet i was able to bring virtual greetings to the group from a mutual friend, mystery writer Lou Allin on Vancouver island.
Anne Jayne presided as president
And after months of internet correspondence beginning with meeting on the mystery loop DorothyL, I met my friend and mystery writer Jayne Barnard who initiated the whole event.

Again, thank you so much to all my Calgary friends old and new and best wishes to a great group of mystery writers.

Again, a heartfelt Thank You to all who sent me home with such lovely memories. I can't wait till the next time!
Many people so kindly credited me with bringing the glorious autumn (summer) weather we enjoyed during my visit. If that's the case, I'm afraid I must apologize for taking it away again since it snowed just before I left.

It was wonderful to meet you too, Donna. I am glad Owl's Nest turned out to be a good venue for your events, and dazzled that it was your debut on PowerPoint. I never would have guessed!
-Jayne, October 18, 2010
Ah, thank you, Jayne. My husband is a good teacher--he set it all up for me. And then Judith loaded it and showed me which buttons to push. A chimpanzee could have cone it, but there wasn't one available.
-Donna, October 18, 2010
You're much better looking than any chimp :-D
-Jayne, October 18, 2010
Sounds like a fabulous event. Wish I could have been there.
-Ilonka, October 18, 2010
I wish you could have, too, Ilonka. Is there any chance you live in the Boise Valley? The Book Extravaganza this weekend is going to be great, too.
